| The seismic events in Kahramanmaraş, February 2023, raised concerns about their impact on the mental well-being of the youth, who are integral to our future. This study aimed to assess hope and anxiety levels among students directly affected by the earthquake, examining the seismic event's emotional impact and the relationship between hope and anxiety. Conducted from May to June 2023 at Karabük University's School of Health Services, the descriptive study used the" Student Information Form,"" State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI)," and" Dispositional Hope Scale (DHS)." Rigorous measures ensured scale validity and reliability. Anxiety and hope levels were compared based on earthquake experiences and material/moral damage. Results indicate statistically significant, elevated state anxiety levels among earthquake-experienced students compared to non-experienced peers (p< 0.05). Students with material/spiritual losses also showed heightened state anxiety (p< 0.05). A weak, statistically significant negative correlation (r=-0.111; p< 0.05) was found between the Dispositional Hope Scale and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. In conclusion, the study establishes a causal link between earthquakes and heightened state anxiety. It concurrently demonstrates that increased hope levels are statistically correlated with reduced state anxiety. This research significantly contributes to understanding seismic events' impact on youth mental health and illuminates the intricate interplay between hope and anxiety. |
