Özet
In the region of Van, Turkey, ovine babesiosis is an important parasitic disease which appears in the summer. This study investigated the effect of babesiosis on the concentrations of MDA (malondialdehyde) produced during lipid peroxidation, and on antioxidant compounds, such as GSH (glutathione), β-carotene, retinol, vitamin C and vitamin E, and nitrate and nitrite. 20 sheep with babesiosis and 8 healthy sheep (control group) were used. These parameters were determined spectrophotometrically in the sheep blood. The results obtained from the infected and control groups were, respectively, as follows: GSH 17.02±2.11 and 25.39±3.62 (mg/dl); MDA 2.68±0.15 and 1.27±0.19 (nmol/ml); nitrate 7.09±0.50 and 4.83±0.21 (mg/litre); nitrite 2.81±0.22 and 1.44±0.03 (mg/litre); vitamin E 1.08±0.18 and 1.59±0.22 (mg/dl); vitamin C 1.48±0.11 and 1.45±0.08 (mg/dl); β-carotene 48.97±0.39 and 57.59±1.74 (µg/dl …
